Science-Informed Insights for Architecture and Urban Design

We collaborate with design teams by enriching the ideation and creative process with scientific insights.

Strategic Briefs

Developing a science-informed approach to a project: Identifying human impact goals, assessment of types of users and their needs, Experience Mapping, and approach to data with Human Metrics
Case Study: Senspace is a start-up creating the next generation of spaces designed for relaxation, restoration, and wellbeing. Hume put together a Strategic Brief presenting the feasibility of the vision through a science-informed lens, creating the basis for a design language and marketing approach.
Client: Senspace

Insight Reports

Translating research into insights and guidelines for specific environments. Using a number of unique tools such as Cognitive Journeys and Spatial Qualities Guidelines
Case Study: The Edge are property developers known for excelling in creating smart buildings. Hume worked with The Edge and local architects on a Berlin Co-working space, guiding design development with science-informed insights.
Client: The Edge

Typology or Topic Reports

Translating research into useful insights for clients and designers focusing on types of environments or human impact.

Cose Study: Enriched Environments for Brain Health thatFoster Creativity, PromotePositivity, & Reduce Stress A Neurogenesis Hypothesis

Case Study: Supporting Children’s Museums as People-Centered Environments: A Science-Informed approach to playful learning environments
Client and Collaborators: HKS
Client: Association of Children's Museums

Conscious
Design

We collaborate to deliver design that is science-informed and set up to evolve through dialogue with its users.

Concept Design

Delivering a science-informed basis for guiding later design stages. Working in collaboration with clients and their architects to set up the foundations of Conscious Design.
Our concept designs include research carried out during the Strategic Brief phase of a project.

Based on the intended human impact of an environment, we identify a number of relevant schemas (situations) and apply our science-informed insights to guide design development.

As a crucial step towards Conscious Design, our outputs include the building blocks of a living person-space dialogue. We work with clients to create a feasible data gathering strategy for user feedback, as well as guidelines for the spatial qualities to evolve in response to that feedback.
‍Case Study: Portland House, London

A project focusing on shared spaces in a large tower renovation in London. Hume was commissioned by developers Landsec to guide the initial and advanced stages of design undertaken by Gensler Architects. Hume's concept and guidelines became the basis for a collaborative design process that ensured scientific insights were applied effectively.
‍
Impact: Productivity, Innovation, Sense of Belonging, Social Connection
Client: Landsec

Full Design

We lead the design process and collaborate with local architects/makers to deliver science-informed spaces set up to evolve through dialogue with their users.
• A full design package and coordination with local consultants for delivery.
• A data strategy developed with the client, ensuring feedback on performance and visitor/user experience.
• A spatial strategy that indicates how the space can evolve over time in response to performance data.
‍Case Study: Urban Thinkscape, Philadelphia

Urban Thinkscape transforms public spaces in neighbourhoods into opportunities for playful learning by infusing them with durable, replicable, and attractive activities that challenge the mind while encouraging caregiver-child interactions.

The project included impact assessment through studies which have been published in peer-reviewed literature, see for example:
